Installation:

Make a new unity file, and install the VRChat Avatar 3.0 SDK unity package into it, which is downloadable from the VRChat website. Also install the Poiyomi toon shaders, which can be downloaded from Github as a Unity package

Open either of the scenes in the folder depending if you want fat sliders. If you've edited textures, place add them to the "Body" material in the materials folder, if you want custom shirt textures, place them into the shirt materials. (These materials may be locked, unlock them before you place textures in them) I'd also suggest renaming the shirt animations to reflect the custom textures, those can be found in the animations folder, and under whichever scene you chose, either fat or base.

When you're done editing the model, go to the VRChat SDK tab at the top, click "show control panel", navigate to the "Builder" tab, then click "Build and Publish". After that you'll need to give the avatar a name add a custom thumbnail (instructions below), and then simply upload the avatar, and it'll be ready in game!

Custom thumbnail instructions:

Uncheck the VRChat Avatar collection and check the VRChat thumbnail collection, and what type of thumbnail you want (fat or skinny) then, under the materials tab, change the textures to reflect any custom textures you have. Also change the text by clicking tab, then typing the new text you want, then clicking tab again to stop editing. Then, when you're all done, click render image. This may take a minute if your computer is slow, but once it's done, save it and put it into unity. (If you know how to use blender, feel free to mess around with posing, framing, lighting, and whatever else you want!)

Once that's done, turn the image type to a sprite and put it in the scene, and flip it on the X axis. Then when you upload your avatar, and line up the sprite thumbnail with the camera so the whole image is in the camera frame. Then you should have your custom, high quality thumbnail in the game!

You may:

  • Upload the avatar to VRChat, and use it freely in game as long as the avatar isn't set to public.
  • Modify the avatar through model, texture, and material changes.
  • Distribute texture edits for the model, as long as they do not include the model itself.
